Chuck Wolf - Flexibility Highways in Motion

Joints and soft tissue inherently possess a mobility and stability quality. When a joint or soft tissue has had prolonged immobility, the proprioceptors become desensitized. Stretching a joint or soft tissue only captures mobility but not necessarily stability. In fact, if the soft tissues cannot control the increased range of motion, the client may be set up for increased risk of injury. Flexibility Highways has examined the 6 integrated chain relationships that is dependent upon the partnership of adjacent muscle groups to attain optimal function and performance. Flexibility Highways in Motion matches movement pattern progressions that enhance the proprioceptors of the soft tissue to maintain strength within each of the 6 Flexibility Highways and enrich movement performance.

Learning Objectives:

  • How does the lower extremity affect the upper extremity, and why should we train them together?
  • Understand the 6 Flexibility Highways, the Anterior, Posterior, Lateral, Anterior & Posterior X-Factors, and the Turnpike
  • Develop strategies for movement progressions to enhance the Flexibility Highways.
  • Develop an application to how limitations create compensations which led to sub-optimal performance and possible injury.
  • Appreciate considerations of regression movements before progressing a client.

Early Bird Fee HK$1,600 before March 15, 2012. Three day package workshop fee HK$4,500. Regular fee HK$2,000 on March 15, 2012 per workshop.

Chuck Wolf - Human Motion::We Move Different than we are Trained!

The integrated chain action of the human body requires an understanding of how the body moves from the ground up. The majority of textbooks and programs break the chain and create a link action of isolated movements that are independent of adjacent joints. This session will explore how the muscles decelerate and stabilize motion before it produces force in a propulsive manner. For example, the attendees will discover how the hamstrings have hardly any flexion moment in true human motion. Those attending this session will leave with a different perspective on how the body moves.

Early Bird Fee HK$1,600 before March 15, 2012. Three day package workshop fee HK$4,500. Regular fee HK$2,000 on March 15, 2012 per workshop.

Chuck Wolf - Low Back Considerations and Functional Solutions

Explore the impact of the feet, hips, and thoracic spine on low back biomechanics. Attendees will develop functional strategies to improve conditions such as sacroiliac dysfunction, low back pain, spinal fusion, scoliosis, spinal stenosis, and the chain reaction upon spinal movements. Learn a regressive to progressive approach to improve functional strength and return to play for clients with back pain.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Learn the architectural structure of the spine
  • Learn how the “Big Rocks” of movement (foot function, ankle dorsiflexion, pelvic motion, and thoracic spine actions) affect the low back
  • How does the lower extremity, the upper extremity, affect the low back, and why should we train them together?
  • Understand the 6 Flexibility Highways, the Anterior, Posterior, Lateral, Anterior & Posterior X-Factors, and the Turnpike
  • Develop strategies for movement progressions to enhance the back strength and function
  • Develop an application to how limitations create compensations which led to sub-optimal performance and possible injury
  • Appreciate considerations of regression movements before progressing a client
  • To develop integrated movement patterns for all demographics ranging from special populations to high level athletes

Connecting the Shoulders

The shoulder has the greatest ROM of any joints of the body, partly because it has no bony restrictions. Therefore, it solely depends on the muscles for stabilization. In daily life (including Pilates workouts and other sport activities) we hardly ever do pure flexion, extension, etc. most of the time it is a combination of movement, which means perfect balance between the different muscles is necessary to do our daily tasks and workouts safely. In this workshop, we will cover mobility and stability exercises and movement sequences that will allow your clients to experience functional movement of the shoulder.

Getting the Most Out of Your Chair

The way we use the Chair has evolved overtime. Originally Joseph Pilates created exercises and exercise combinations on the Wunda Chair to address specific issues of the individual client. With the introduction of new equipment, chairs have found their way into group fitness classes. In this workshop we will focus on the different ways you can exploit your Chair. We will cover how you can create flowing combinations to change the intensity of your workout, and experience the difference when using the principles of repetitions. Then to top it all off, we will focus on some specific deceleration exercises. These new exercises will challenge your body in completely new dimension.

Functional Choreography

Every Pilates movement has a goal and a purpose. If exercises, modification and transition don’t teach the clients something, our mentor Romana Kryzanowska used to say, “you are just moving air!” It can be very difficult to keep your Pilates mat classes educational and at the same time new and fresh. In reaction to this, we often add exercises, variations and transitions. But are your additions functional? Is your Choreography functional and does it teach your clients something about the exercise? In this workshop, you will experience transitions, connections, modifications and build ups that are both functional and fun, yet maintain the spirit of the Pilates method that you can implement right away.

Unilateral Movement Sequences

Many of our clients suffer from unilateral development due to sport activities, work environment and even daily activities. Just think about normal everyday tasks like carrying your bags on the same side, writing with the same hand, walking up and down the stairs leading with the same leg, etc. etc. The traditional Pilates work generally does not emphasize unilateral exercises, but works the body as even as possible. However, unilateral movement patterns can be extremely effective in Pilates sessions and classes not only to re-balance the body and thereby avoiding potential injuries, but also to improve sport and activity performances. In this workshop, we will cover unilateral movement sequences that will address some of your clients’ imbalances.

Hips, Knees and Feet

The pelvis is the intersection between the legs and the trunk. The pelvis is responsible for supporting the majority of the body weight and forms a complex articulation with the spine at the sacroiliac joint. The stability of the knee relies on the ligaments and muscles. The knee encounters considerable stress from bearing the weight of the body and performing the activities of daily living, as well as undergoing the wear and tear of recreational activities such as walking, running and sports. The feet are a masterpiece of engineering and provide the interface between the body and the floor. It is where the vertical plane of the body meets the horizontal plane of the earth.

In this workshop, we will focus on the functional unit of the lower extremities. You will experience movement sequences and patterns that create functional strength, mobility and stability. We will cover movement sequences that will allow your clients to experience how the hips, knees and feet should function, and some of the most common problems concerning the lower extremities.

One of the hottest buzzwords currently in the fitness industry is "barefoot training". As we explore the benefits of working-out sans footwear we must ask ourselves "Why?" Why train barefoot when shoes seem to provide the support and shock absorption needed for optimal performance? The answer to this question lies in the function of the human foot.

With no established guidelines on barefoot training protocol, this is the only workshop that will fully prepare fitness professionals and running coaches to better integrate barefoot training and foot fitness into their client's workout and running programming.
